Programs
CDM has recently begun two new program initiatives -
We contribute to the transnational workers rights struggle through:
Outreach - creating an educated and empowered workforce
CDM educates low-wage Mexico-based migrant workers about their legal rights in connection with their employment in the United States. CDM conducts oral know-your-rights presentations and workshops for workers in major sending areas, and uses mass media to reach workers in additional areas. CDM's workshops are specifically designed to develop leadership talents among workers. These presentations generally focus on the civil, human, labor and employment rights of migrants who live in the U.S. We also hold more specific meetings for women migrants, and are developing a more in-depth health and safety training.
In addition to conducting outreach to workers through presentations, Centro staff regularly give radio and television interviews. We have developed working relationships with a number of TV and radio stations.
CDM liaises closely with other non-profit and community groups, as well as governmental organizations. CDM staff also lead seminars and provide background papers and briefings to Mexican consular officers, government officials, and non-governmental organizations such as human rights groups about U.S. laws, regulations, and policies regarding labor rights and immigration issues.
Intake, Evaluation and Referral - removing the border as a barrier to justice
As a result of our outreach activities, many workers come forward requesting assistance in addressing violations of their rights. We perform intake interviews with these workers, evaluate their claims, and put the workers in contact with services in the United States that can help them.
In this way, CDM acts as intermediary and access point to legal and social services providers for Mexico-based migrants and family members.
Direct Representation - providing access to justice
In conjunction with other law firms, CDM provides direct legal services free of charge to Mexican nationals in employment and civil rights cases, in those instances where the program has special expertise or resources. These services include conducting discovery on the ground in Mexico for projects that could not otherwise represent these workers.
Policy Advocacy - linking the Mexican community with policymakers in the United States
CDM project staff have expertise in transnational labor issues, particularly those related to guestworker programs, and provide policy analysis and recommendations to Mexican and U.S. policy-makers and worker advocacy groups.
