Today, CDM is training staff members from Mexico’s Secretary of Labor (STPS in Spanish) who will work in a call center designated for a new recruitment fraud prevention hotline for H-2 migrant workers.

photo 2CDM, ProDesc, INEDIM, Jornaleros Safe and Global Workers, have worked closely with STPS and the Mexican Foreign Ministry (SRE in Spanish), to establish a major new recruitment fraud prevention campaign providing support for workers in Mexico who receive job offers they suspect may be fraudulent.

Individuals seeking U.S. temporary work visas have very few resources to consult when trying to gauge the veracity of an employment offer. Many workers become the victims of recruitment fraud—meaning they receive a misleading job offer, are offered a job that doesn’t exist, or are coerced into paying illegal fees to recruiters—because of the sheer lack of accessible information.

This collaborative effort between CDM, ProDesc, INEDIM, Jornaleros Safe and Global Workers and the SRE and STPS, provides much-needed support to fill the current information vacuum workers face when seeking U.S. employment.

The launch of this campaign includes a series of radio spots directed at workers, cautioning them against offers that sound too good to be true and warning them, “Don’t be misled.” The radio spots, along with print materials distributed in migrant communities, urge workers to call the STPS call center for assistance in answering their recruitment-related questions.
