CDM conducts participatory educational workshops with workers in major migrant sending areas in Mexico. CDM focuses on prevention of workplace abuses by conducting “know your rights” trainings with migrants before they depart for the United States in an environment in which they feel comfortable speaking with advocates. The workshops focus on rights under wage and hour laws, health and safety regulations, workers’ compensation laws, discrimination laws, and guestworker regulations, as well as safety and health risk prevention trainings. CDM also provides a context for understanding the contemporary labor market and conditions through a history of civil rights struggles in the United States. With these workshops, migrant workers arrive with the information and confidence they need to defend their workplace rights.
In addition to CDM’s general outreach meetings, CDM broadly distributes its know-your-rights materials through its networks. CDM has also created materials specifically designed for women migrants, a health and safety manual for all migrants, and oral materials for indigenous migrants.
