Legal Director

Centro de los Derechos del Migrante, Inc. (CDM) has begun a search for a new Legal Director. The Legal Director, based in the Mexico City office, will oversee CDM’s Legal Program, providing direct legal services to low-wage migrant workers, supporting strategic litigation, and providing litigation support to U.S. attorneys with Mexico-based clients.  Read More

Responsibilities include:

  • Supervise legal work, caseload and administrative duties of CDM’s attorneys, paralegals, law student interns and volunteers;
  • Represent migrant workers in wage and hour litigation in federal and state courts and administrative proceedings;
  • Review legal intakes to assess potential claims under state and federal labor and employment law;
  • Provide brief services, advice, and referrals;
  • Identify potential individual and class litigation arising from direct services work and refer to U.S. attorneys;
  • Oversee and implement Litigation Support Services Program, providing litigation support to U.S. attorneys, including locating and communicating with workers who have returned to Mexico, obtaining documents, facilitation of remote depositions and other aspects of transnational discovery; assisting workers to apply for immigration relief to travel to U.S. for proceedings; assisting in class action settlement implementation.
  • Oversee BANSEFI Funds Distribution Program, facilitating transfers of settlement funds from U.S. attorneys to clients in Mexico;
  • Collaborate with partner organizations and government agencies in Mexico and the U.S.;
  • Participate in outreach trips and conduct employment law know-your-rights trainings for migrants in their home communities.

Qualifications

  • Spanish language fluency;
  • Substantial experience defending the employment rights of workers, immigrants or other low-income individuals;
  • J.D. required, with a minimum of five years of related legal experience preferred;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Demonstrated commitment to workers´ rights issues.

Compensation:

  • Compensation dependent on years of experience.

Operations Manager

CDM is looking for a professional and experienced Operations Manager to join our dynamic, binational, multilingual team! The Operations Manager will be in charge of handling the day-to-day operations of our Baltimore office. Additionally, he or she will be responsible for identifying, recruiting, and training exceptional candidates for open positions, and supporting our team members so that they do their best work. The Operations Manager will manage the organization’s finances in collaboration with the Executive Director and Finance Director and assist with major administrative functions of the organization to ensure that CDM meets all 501(c)(3) reporting, payroll, tax, corporate, and other responsibilities. Read More

Position Responsibilities:

  • Develop and support our team members and their talents (monitor staff performance, carry out staff evaluations, lead staff development);
  • Strengthen our team by advertising open positions and identifying, recruiting, and on-boarding new staff members, fellows, and volunteers;
  • Manage compensation and benefits administration and recordkeeping;
  • Ensure staff’s compliance with time-keeping requirements and maintain accurate paid time off and leave records;
  • Oversee certain budget lines and authorize relevant expenditures;
  • Support accounting team to prepare for annual audit and during audit and support Executive Director with follow-up to auditors;
  • Manage accounts payable and receivable for CDM’s Baltimore office (prepare invoices for CDM’s contract work; scan and deposit checks; pay bills for U.S. office that are not on automatic payment);
  • Oversee CDM’s insurance policies;
  • Handle administrative functions (maintain an adequate inventory of office supplies, answer phones, check voicemail, check CDM’s email account and redirect emails, and handle incoming mail);

Desired Qualifications:

  • Fluency in Spanish and English;
  • Bachelor of Arts or Science;
  • A minimum of 3-5 years’ relevant work experience;
  • Familiarity with a range of personal computing applications, including QuickBooks, Microsoft Office Suite, and Salesforce;
  • Strong cultural competence and the ability to engage effectively with various individuals in a multicultural, diverse organization;
  • Knowledge of tax and other compliance implications of non-profit status;

Contratados.org Outreach Coordinator

CDM is looking for a Contratados.org Outreach Coordinator to join our team! This is a consultant position for a period of ten to twelve months. The consultant will be dedicated to the development and promotion of our multimedia platform, Contratados.org. The Coordinator will be based in Mexico City, work part time (approximately 12-20 days per month, depending on the start date), and travel frequently within Mexico. We prefer that the Coordinator be based in Mexico City, though candidates from other parts of Mexico that meet the requirements for this position will also be considered. About Contratados.org

Contratados.org is a platform that was co-designed by CDM and migrant workers to provide migrant workers with the necessary tools to prevent and report abuses that occur in the workplace and during recruitment. Since its launch, hundreds of thousands of workers have used Contratados.org to access information about recruiters and employers, share their experiences, protect themselves during recruitment and in their workplaces, and advocate for their rights.

About the Outreach Coordinator

The Outreach Coordinator will work closely with our Outreach, Education, and Leadership Development team; our Communications Coordinator; and the Migrant Defense Committee to strengthen and expand Contratados.org as an organizing and educational tool to promote transparency and defend labor rights. He/she will dedicate his/her time to:

  • Using the platform to conduct outreach to migrant workers who travel to the United States to work (including a variety of visa categories and industries);
  • Improving and diversifying the content available to workers;
  • Working with the Migrant Defense Committee to train members and connect them with outreach opportunities in their communities;
  • Conducting direct outreach activities in migrant worker communities; and
  • Searching for opportunities to collaborate with other allied organizations and government bodies.

As such, the ideal candidate must possess the following professional qualifications:

  • Extensive organizing experience, preferably with migrant worker populations;
  • Familiarity with worker justice issues and gender perspective;
  • Knowledge of Mexico’s geography and socio-political context;
  • Experience with digital communication, and specifically, using social networks as an organizing tool;
  • Availability to travel at least once per month.

Executive Assistant

Position Responsibilities:

  • Manage Executive Director’s calendar; assist her in preparing for meetings, events, and presentations; coordinate logistics and travel arrangements;
  • Support the Executive Director and Development Coordinator with individual donor campaigns;
  • Prepare and process reimbursements;
  • Draft reports and correspondence for Executive Director and Development Coordinator as requested;
  • Provide administrative office support as needed;
  • Assist in event planning and coordination; and
  • Assist Executive Director and Director of Operations in Mexico with the orientation of new fellows, staff members, and volunteers.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Oral and written proficiency in Spanish and English;
  • Bachelor of Arts or Science;
  • A minimum of 2-3 years’ relevant work experience;
  • Exceptional organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple, overlapping deadlines;
  • Substantial knowledge of migration, temporary worker policy, politics of immigration reform, and U.S.-Mexico binational relations.
  • Demonstrated skills in grant writing, expository and persuasive writing;
  • Familiarity with a range of personal computing applications, including QuickBooks, Constant Contact, Google Apps, Microsoft Office Suite, and SalesForce.
  • Ability to interface effectively with various individuals in a multi-cultural, diverse organization; and
  • Willingness to travel within the U.S. and Mexico.
